The player is planning to pass, but she's hoping to gain information that will save her the pot.

This is an extremely valuable maneuver. If the player continues or accelerates his bet in response to the faked calling motion, the pro will "reconsider" for a few seconds and then pass. If, however, the grab for calling chips causes the bettor to look back at this hand, there's an excellent chance that the bet is weak or an outright bluff. If, after some hesitation, the player decides to go through with a bluff, he'll usually bet with extra emphasis as shown in the clip. This is an attempt to appear strong, so the pro will simply call and win the pot.

Use this technique only in the absence of other tells, because overuse will wise up your opponents and diminish its long-range effectiveness.
